I Never Thought I Would Wear This Skirt Again, But I’m Obsessed This Summer

Legend has it, if you remember wearing something the first time round, you shouldn’t wear it again. But it’s 2022, and “rules” are there to be broken, especially when it comes to fashion. Everything Y2K is making a comeback, and as a 10-year-old at the time, I’ve worn a lot of these trends already— including floaty bohemian maxi skirts, pedal pushers (remember those?) and, of course, the floor-length denim skirt. Practically everyone owned one at the time, but these were left in the early 00s, where I thought they belonged… until now, that is.

I bought a maxi skirt from Zara with a matching top at the start of spring, and quite frankly, I’m obsessed. The knit version soon sold out, and it only took me a week or so to spot a few people in the street also wearing it. Skip forward to summer, and I can’t stop seeing the throwback skirt loved by the likes of J.Lo and Christina Aguilera now worn by everyone from Bella Hadid to Zoë Kravitz. And that’s just the celebs. My whole Instagram feed is packed full of ways to wear them. So, I’m calling it, the maxi skirt is officially back for 2022. Need further proof? Here are some ways to style them (sans disc belt) this summer, along with 21 styles to shop now.

Style Notes: Here I am wearing the Zara skirt that changed my mind about the maxi. And I’ve worn it on repeat, with everything from the matching top to a white vest and over a swimsuit on holiday.

Style Notes: Monikh is one of the long-standing fans of the maxi skirt. Filling her wardrobe with so many iterations, she shows how the full-skirt is best worn with platform heels and a billowing blouse.

Style Notes: Another girl after my own heart, Lois is also a big fan of the maxi skirt co-ord. Keeping it chic, the fashion influencer proves top-to-toe black is a summer vibe.

Style Notes: Crochet is quite literally everywhere this season—from tops and swimwear to skirts —and this is how to wear it. Throw on over a bikini, just like Emma, and watch as it becomes your fail-safe holiday look.

The wrap will always be universally flattering.

Just add a denim shirt and clogs.

The shirred waist makes it so comfy.

I’m imagining this with a white vest top, white shirt and trainers.

It has pockets!

Naturally I want the matching top, too.

This one is delivering all the summer vibes.

Just add a simple vest and sliders.

So fun with a string bikini top on holiday.

This one is just made to be a wedding guest look.

This spotty set has my undivided attention.

The slip skirt has gone further south for summer.

Valentino has made this the colour of the year, so who am I to argue?

This belted iteration is just so pretty.

A summer hero piece.

I’m obsessed with all things Matteau.

The easy way to try a print clash.

Swooning over this tulle beauty.

A round-the-clock winner.

Ready to throw on over your swimsuit. Note: just add slip flops and a straw bag.

You’ll want to pack this one on your next vacay.
